TQT will cover the research relevant for the emerging quantum technologies in the four pillars constituting the Quantum Manifesto: Quantum communication, computation, simulation and sensing. The Institute will be solely of theoretical nature, its main purposes, supporting the four pillars, will be fundamental science and education. In Trieste a large number of groups is fully involved in theoretical quantum technologies.
At SISSA a number of faculty members have active research lines that include: Quantum Annealing /Adiabatic Quantum Computation, Quantum simulations, Out-of- equilibrium integrable and non-integrable quantum systems, Quantum entanglement, gauge/gravity correspondence, Topological quantum computation, Quantum emulators and cold atomic systems and Open quantum systems. In addition to these well-established research lines, an activity in Tensor Network just started bridging quantum information with efficient classical simulations.
UNITS have developed research lines in Open Quantum Systems, Quantum Mechanics and Gravity, Quantum Information and Complexity, Non-equilibrium Quantum Dynamics, Mesoscopic Quantum Systems, and the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics. New activities are to be developed in the fields of Quantum Machine Learning and Quantum Neural Networks in collaboration with local Information Theoretical Data Science groups, also envisaging didactical activities and common courses for master students. Joint initiatives are already planned with the UNITS Master in Data Science and Scientific Computing.
ICTP has active research lines in Quantum Simulators, Adiabatic Computation and Quantum Annealing, Solid State Quantum Information Processing, Tensor Networks, Quantum Open Systems. There is a plan to enlarge the "quantum-related activities" to the field of quantum computation applied to quantum chemistry. The bridging of quantum information with quantum chemistry is expected to be an important asset of TQT in view of the world wide recognition of Trieste research in ab-initio calculation. In addition to the existing research lines also connections with machine-learning/data science techniques are in the next future horizon. The expertise of ICTP relevant for the quantum enabled technologies involve High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics as well as Mathematics.
